SCAR Group of Specialists on Environmental Affairs and Conservation - GOSEAC

SCAR has always attached the highest importance to the protection of the Antarctic environment. Initially this was done through the Working Group on Biology and its Sub-Committee on Conservation, where the first draft of what was to become the Agreed Measures for the Conservation of Fauna and Flora was made. The Sub-Committee also routinely assessed proposals for new Specially Protected Areas and Sites of Special Scientific Interest before these are transmitted through National Committees to the Antarctic Treaty for consideration. In 1988 the Group of Specialists on Environmental Affairs and Conservation (GOSEAC) replaced the Sub-Committee on Conservation. GOSEAC has a wider membership than its predcessor, having representation from geologists, geographers and logistic experts as well as biologists. Its current chief task is the provision of scientific advice to SCAR on a variety of environmental matters. Much of this advice is then passed by SCAR to the Antarctic Treaty Parties.
