SCAR Working Group on Human Biology and Medicine
The Working Group has dual roles of research and medical practice in human interaction with the Antarctic environment. Both of these roles are aimed at assisting scientists of all disciplines, who are acquiring knowledge of the region, to carry out their research safely and efficiently in the hostile Antarctic environment. Recent research suggests personnel are subject to a significant disturbance of their internal milieu while under the Antarctic conditions of isolation, cold and photoperiodicity. Recent research has included investigating changes in the immune response, hormonal adaptation to the cold, microbiology, behavioural adaptation and photobiology, such as the effects of ultra-violet radiation on humans in Antarctica. Although there are no specific Antarctic health disorders, the Working Group has an operational role in liaising with polar medical groups to improve Antarctic health care services.
