NOTES

1. Only highlights of the Italian Programme (XVII and XVIII Antarctic Expeditions are reported.
2. A few days after the nominal time when, for the scope of the present report, "past activities" end and "planned acitvities" begin, i.e. 30 June 2002, the SCAR received a new structure (Shanghai, July 2002). Accordingly, the activities of the period 1 July 2002-30 June 2003 are here grouped under the headings of the SCAR Scientific Standing Committees (SSC): Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Geosciences.
3. Most of the scientific research is interdisciplinary. Consequently a scientific activity may be mentioned in the section of a particular SCAR WG or SSC but it may be of interest to more than one of them. Pleasse go throuh he entire document in order to have a complete overview of the activities in progress.
4. Many Italian scientific programmes are developed in co-operation with one or more countries. An international programme is mentioned here whenever there is a substantial Italian contribution to it.
5. Technology represents a sizeable part of, and an important support to, the research in Antarctica. However, technological research, such as robotics and remote contro;of equipment, is not listed here, because it does not fall under the scope of any specific SCAR grouping.
6. The Report refers only to activities in Antarctica. Many activities developed in Italy for data retrieval and sample analyses or for the preparatio of the next campaign are not listed in the following tables. Similarly, activities relevant to he SCAR goals -v such as the composite Gazetteer of Antarctica or the AGONET Data Analysis Facility - not developed in Antarctica are not mentioned in this document.
7. Italian activites in Antarctica are organized in the framework of the national programme PNRA and are identified by a reference code. In the following such a code (REF) should allow an easy recognition of the project and the access to further details.
