Standing Committee on the Antarctic Treaty System (SC-ATS)

SCAR is one of three official observers to the Antarctic Treaty and has provided independent scientific advice to the Treaty since it was ratified in 1961. This Committee (SC-ATS) provides scientific representation at the meetings of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) and the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM), organises and prepares the scientific advice requested by the Antarctic Treaty System and briefs SCAR Officers and Committees on Treaty deliberations.

SCAR's Role in the Antarctic Treaty System

SCAR submitted a paper to the XXXII ATCM, held in Baltimore in 2009, which set out its role in the Antarctic Treaty system:

Action Group on SCAR and the ATS in the 21st Century (AG-SATC) 2008

The Action Group on SCAR and the ATS in the 21st Century (AG-SATC) was set up in February 2008 with the aim of improving the nature and timeliness of the advice that SCAR provides to the Treaty System, and to provide the SCAR Executive with alternative approaches to managing SCAR's advisory role to the ATS. It held a meeting at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, UK in May 2008, and reported to the XXX SCAR Delegates Meeting in Moscow, Russia in July 2008.

Following on from the recommendations of AG-SATC, SCAR submitted the paper to XXXII ATCM (2009) on its role in the Antarctic Treaty System.
