Prince of Asturias Award and Asturias Fellowships 2003-04

In October 2002, the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 2002, was awarded to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in recognition of its role in coordinating scientific research in Antarctica.

At the XXVII SCAR Meeting in Shanghai, China, the Delegates agreed that the € 50,000 prize should be used to establish a Fellowship with the aim of motivating highly qualified young researchers into Antarctic science. Applications would be invited from young scientists in SCAR member countries to undertake an Antarctic research project in a country other than their own. The five best applicants would each be awarded a grant of $10,000 to carry out the proposed research and they would be entitled to style themselves "SCAR Prince of Asturias Fellows".

SCAR received thirty-two applications from scientists in eighteen countries across a broad range of disciplines and subject areas. After careful consideration by the Review Panel five applicants were selected for the Asturias Fellowships 2003-04.
