SCAR Circular no 734

Copy: Mr A L Clarke (WG-GGI)
Dear Sir
Coordinates of Wintering StationsSCAR has routinely published the list of Antarctic Winter Stations, with their coordinates, in the SCAR Bulletin, normally in the October issue each year. The coordinates have been given to the nearest minute of latitude and longitude.
Drew Clarke, Chairman of the Working Group on Geodesy and Geographic Information (WG-GGI) has brought to my attention that, when plotting the positions of some stations on large-scale maps, the stations appear to be located in the Sea! Therefore, he has asked me to request that you provide revised coordinates for all your winter stations giving positions to the nearest 5 seconds of latitude and 10 seconds of longitude. The information should also include the type of feature used for this datum, eg a GPS marker, a main building, monument or flagpole, etc. This is particularly important where some stations are located very close to each other.
This information will be collated and displayed on the WG-GGI web site (www.scar-ggi.org.au) and also be used for the annual listing in the SCAR Bulletin.
The information should be sent to the SCAR Secretariat, preferably by e-mail, with a copy to Mr Glenn Johnstone (Secretary to the WG-GGI) at the following e-mail address:
glennjohnstone@auslig.gov.au
The WG-GGI would welcome the same information for those stations that are routinely used for summer-only operations. However, the SCAR Bulletin will continue to list only the winter stations, although this practice may change in the future.
We should be grateful to receive the information as soon as possible so that it can be incorporated into the WG-GGI data set.
Yours faithfully
Dr P D Clarkson
Executive Secretary
