SCAR Circular No. 771 (electronic only)

11th December 2007

To: National Committees, Delegates and Alternate Delegates

Subject: Draft Code of Conduct

Dear Colleague,

Over the past year the SCAR Life Sciences Group has been working on a modification to SCAR's long-standing Environmental Code of Conduct for land-based scientific field research in Antarctica. A revised Code was proposed to the SCAR Executive Committee at its meeting in Washington DC in July this year, and approved for consultation with the wider SCAR community and COMNAP. The Code of Conduct is intended to complement the relevant sections of the Madrid Protocol and provide guidance for all researchers conducting scientific research on land, lakes and ice.

The draft Code of Conduct has been circulated widely to the relevant SCAR and COMNAP groups, and finally modified based on feedback. We now request that the National Committees approve and/or comment on the Code of Conduct. This stage of the consultation has to be done by email, so that the final version can be forwarded to the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat in time for the ATCM/CEP meeting in Kiev in June 2008.

Bearing in mind that the deadline for receipt of documents for the ATCM is mid April, please send comments or indicate your approval to Dr Mike Sparrow (mds68@cam.ac.uk) by March 1st 2008. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
