Notes from the SCAR President, number 33 (22 December 2010)

Seasons Greetings!!

Colleagues,

I always intend to keep my notes short but somehow there are many items to cover! This time my main intent is to wish everyone great and restful holidays as 2010 comes to a close! I promise this note will be short!

The second Muse Prize winner, Dr. Helen Fricker, was recognized at the 2010 American Geophysical Union Meetings in San Francisco, USA last week at a well-attended reception by the Cryospheric Group. About 30 close friends joined Helen in a celebratory dinner after the reception. SCAR greatly appreciates the on-going support of the Tinker Foundation for this legacy of the IPY 2007-2008. Renuka Badhe, SCAR Executive Officer, did an excellent job arranging the award ceremonies.

By now you have received the final draft of the SCAR Strategic Plan 2011-2016. This final opportunity for comment concludes more than a year of consultation on future directions for SCAR. The Secretariat, especially Mike Sparrow, has spent great effort to develop what I believe is excellent plan for the next six years. While comments are welcome, we hope that they will be minor at this late stage of the process.

The Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) plan is in final revision and an Executive Officer position has been advertised for the SOOS Secretariat. The support of Australia for this important initiative is greatly appreciated and a formal Secretariat is a welcomed development that will accelerate implementation of the ambitious SOOS plan.

There are many other items I could report on but I will stop here! I will be visiting the India National Antarctic Program and attend the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) workshop in Potsdam, Germany over the holiday break from my University. I wish all of you a joyful holiday season with your family and friends. As always our thoughts are with those deployed in the south so far away from home! The very best for the new year and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Chuck K.
President of SCAR
