SCAR Strategic Plan 2011-2016
Dear Colleagues,
I hope this note finds you well and that the New Year has gotten off to a great start! The SCAR agenda remains full and is off to a busy beginning in 2011. I recently had the opportunity to visit the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR) in Goa, India and to attend a workshop by the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) in Potsdam, Germany. I was ably hosted in India by Dr. Rasik Ravindra and his staff and I deeply appreciate their hospitality. I took the opportunity to meet with the Minsiter of Earth Sciences in Delhi to thank India for its participation in SCAR and encourage even greater involvement in the future. Ad Huiskes, Mike Sparrow, and I attended a Joint SCAR/IASC Executive Committee meeting and encouraged IASC to include topics of interest to both Arctic and Antarctic scientists and researchers in their newly designed science themes. The meeting with IASC was productive and SCAR and IASC are working together more closely than ever before!
I am pleased to announce that the SCAR Strategic Plan 2011-2016 in now completed and being printed. I apologize for multiple-postings of the plan as the Secretariat has begun widely disseminating the document. I want to express my gratitude for the broad and thoughtful participation by so many of you in developing this plan. I believe we have a strong strategic plan that represents the aspiration of the organization and provides a clear and forward looking blue-print for implementing the SCAR vision and mission over the next six years. I also believe that the process of consultation and discussion was as important as the final document itself! I know of no other time when the SCAR community was so actively engaged in planning for the future.
I will stop here and once again thank each of the national delegates for their continuing financial and moral support of SCAR! If you were wondering, the business case for increasing SCAR membership fees is in its final revision and will be provided shortly. I hope that with the business case and the Strategic Plan you will have adequate information to convince your funders that an increase in SCAR membership fees is not only warranted but necessary for SCAR to continue to be a leader in Antarctic science and policy advice.
Sincerely yours,
Chuck Kennicutt
President of SCAR
