XI SCAR Biology Symposium
15 - 19 July 2013, Barcelona, Spain
Life in Antarctica: Boundaries and Gradients in a Changing Environment
The main theme for the XIth Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) symposium is "Life in Antarctica: Boundaries and Gradients in a Changing Environment". This symposium links the functional importance of land and water ecosystems and their biocomplexity, under an ecosystemic perspective in order to understand the Antarctic trophic web, effects of human impacts such as the ozone hole, climate change, the increase in tourism activities, the flexible boundaries anddynamic gradients in Antarctic ecosystem, as well the Antarctic marinebiodiversity through its patterns, processes and trends.
An important aspect of this symposium is the outreach and education section, which will emphasize the importance of communication between polar researchers and educators in order to improve understanding and connections between scientists and society. Moreover, one of the aims of the symposium is transferring scientific knowledge beyond the scientific community and letting the general public take an active part in post-symposium hands-on activities, open lectures, seminars, courses and exhibitions. Such exposure will be of undoubtedly benefit to polar science. The newly created Spanish Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS Spain) is going to be highly involved in the symposium by organising round table sessions and preparing outreach contents.
This symposium will be also the perfect oportunity to show the final results of the SCAR programme "Evolution and Biodiversity in the Antarctic". Similarly, the new SCAR programmes "State of the Antarctic Ecosystem" (AntEco) and "Antarctic Thresholds - Ecosystem Resilience and Adaptation" (AnT-ERA) will be presented to the scientific community and will outline their objectives and perspectives for the coming years.
For more information, please visit the Symposium website or email xithsbs@icm.csic.es with any queries.
Abstract Submission is open. The deadline for abstract and awards submission has been extended to 28 February 2013. Registration is open on the Symposium website.

SCAR AAA Second Workshop
24 - 26 July 2013, Siena, Italy
The second workshop of the SCAR "Astronomy and Astrophysics from Antarctica" programme will take place at Certosa di Pontignano, a former Carthusian Monastery near Siena, Italy.
This meeting builds upon the foundations laid at the Taronga Zoo meeting in Sydney in 2011 and is themed around the four AAA Working Groups:
- Site testing, validation and data archiving;
- Arctic site testing;
- Science goals;
- Major new facilities.
Astronomy and Astrophysics from Antarctica became a Scientific Research Programme of SCAR in 2010. Broadly stated, its objectives are to coordinate astronomical activities in Antarctica in a way that ensures the best possible outcomes from international investment in Antarctic astronomy, and to maximize the opportunities for productive interaction with other disciplines. This meeting brings together the key players in Antarctic astronomy to review the implementation plans of the four AAA Working Groups, and to coordinate future activities.
On-line registration is now open on the workshop page of the AAA website.
As this is a live-in workshop at a former medieval monastery, space is limited and early registration is highly recommended to secure a place. Further information is available from Silvia Masi (email: silvia.masi@roma1.infn.it).

International Workshop on Antarctic Ice Rises
26 - 29 August 2013, Tromsø, Norway
The aim of this interdisciplinary workshop on Antarctic ice rises is to look at all aspects of their physical science to bring an Earth Systems Science perspective to their major controls of Antarctic ice-sheet dynamics.
Recent studies have highlighted the important role of the ice rises, the grounded ice surrounded by ice shelves, in both supporting the ice shelf and buttressing upstream glaciers. This is particularly significant in the Antarctic coastal regions, which are seen as crucial foci of continental changes in ice mass balance. Ice rises also provide a unique platform for reconstructing the highly-variable coastal climate by obtaining and analyzing ice cores. Given their crucial role, ice rises are not well studied, and part of the reason for this is their understanding requires cross-disciplinary integration. The researchers involved in ice-rise research are distributed across nations and disciplines and are not well coordinated.
The goal of this workshop is to develop a summary of the current challenges of ice-rise research, share community-wide understandings of the current status of knowledge beyond each discipline, and identify and produce recommendations for future directions of collaborative interdisciplinary work on ice rises.
The workshop is sponsored by SCAR, CliC, APECS, the Research Council of Norway, British Antarctic Survey, and Center for Ice, Climate and Ecosystems (ICE) of the Norwegian Polar Institute.
Registration deadline is 24 June 2013. Travel support is available for early career scientists and attendees from countries in economic transition.
For more details, please visit the Workshop website.
