Water and Ice, 20th Anniversary Symposium, Swiss Committee on Polar Research

17 September 2004, Bern Switzerland
Type of Event: Symposium
Theme: Switzerland is the water castle of Europe. The solid and liquid phases of water have always played a special role in Swiss research. From the abyss of the ocean to the heights of the stratosphere, from the glaciers in the Alps to the polar ice sheets, the cycle of water shapes the Earth's climate. The delicate balance of the global hydrological cycle is the source of the biggest uncertainties and surprises in our attempt to assess future climate change.

The symposuim Water and Ice commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Swiss Committee on Polar Research of the Council of the Swiss Scientific Academies and presents the latest results and highlights of science on water and ice on Earth.

Frontiers and Opportunities in Antarctic Geosciences

29-31 August 2004, Certosa di Pontignano (Siena), Italy
Scheduled to follow the 32nd IGC
Type of Event: Workshop
Conveners: C.A.Ricci (Italy), C. Siddoway and T. Wilson (USA)
Workshop details are posted under "Forthcoming Events" at the Museo Nationale dell'Antartide website, www.mna.it/english/News/novita_set.htm .
Workshop Aims: This international workshop will be a forum for discussion of scientific goals and outstanding problems in Antarctic earth science, new techniques or technologies suited to the Antarctic continent and near-shore environment, and potential international collaborative ventures. The workshop will offer an opportunity to gain information about current and future geosciences research in Antarctica, for researchers who have interest in undertaking new studies of the continent and for geoscientists presently engaged in Antarctic research. Those with prior experience can acquaint others with outcomes of recent research, successful international collaborations, and interdisciplinary scientific programs in geology, geophysics and glaciology. Individuals who are new to Antarctic research may outline ideas for new investigations and gain valuable knowledge of sources of support from international Antarctic programs, and of possible collaborative opportunities within the international research community.
