Advanced Biology training course
Starting January 2008 (one month), US Mcmurdo Station, Antarctica
This is an international course, open to all nationalities. Applications are invited from graduate students currently enrolled in a PhD program, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty level research scientists who are interested in the study of extreme environments and the biology of Antarctic organisms. 2008 TOS Ocean Sciences Meeting

Early-Career Polar Researchers: Become Part of the International Polar Year (IPY) Legacy

Advanced students and PhD graduates conducting research in the Arctic or Antarctic region during the IPY and who complete their degree between 1 January 2002 and 31 March 2009 are eligible to apply. Applicants must be conducting polar research during the IPY, but they do not need to be part of an IPY-approved project. Scholars from the full range of natural and social sciences are eligible. While the focus is on the US system with preference given for American citizens and US residents, a few slots will be reserved for citizens of any country who are residing outside the US and demonstrate interests in working with US researchers.

Workshop on Improving Ice Sheet Models
5 - 7 July 2008, St. Petersburg, Russia
The Workshop is scheduled immediately prior to the SCAR/IASC Open Science Conference, St. Petersburg, Russia, and will involve one day of invited presentations, followed by one day of discussions and writing in break-out groups, and half a day of concluding plenary discussions. We anticipate bringing together some 50 participants from diverse disciplines including glaciology, high-latitude oceanography and meteorology, geophysics, representing both modelling and observational communities.

7th International NCCR Climate Summer School: "Key challenges in climate variability and change"

The NCCR Climate, Switzerland's Centre of Excellence in Climate and Climate Impact Research, invites young scientists to join leading climate researchers for keynote lectures, workshops and poster sessions on the occasion of the seventh NCCR Climate Summer School 2008.
The summer school is open to young researchers (PhD students and Post-Docs) worldwide. Participation is highly competitive and will be limited to a maximum of 70. The registration fee (1400 CHF) includes full board accommodation, excursion and teaching material. A small number of grants will be available for students from developing countries.
Deadline for Applications: 20 December 2007. Successful applicants will be notified in February 2008.

ICES Annual Science Meeting

One of the theme session presented will be on the role of sea ice in polar environments (details below). Any researchers interested in this important aspect of Arctic and Antarctic environments, as well as those interested in climate change in polar regions, are encouraged to consider presenting and/or attending this session.
Theme Session B: Role of sea ice in polar ecosystems. Contributions are sought on issues such as: Physical processes related to sea ice; Plankton production; Ecological role of ice edge; Pelagic-benthic coupling; Sea ice as marine mammal habitat; Earth Observation approaches; or any other topic related to sea ice.
The deadline for abstracts is 21 April 2008 and can be made through the ICES Conference Website.

15th International Symposium on Polar Sciences - KOPRI - 'Polar Ecosystems: Biodiversity and Adaptation'

The Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) announces the 15th International Symposium on Polar Sciences. This year's theme is "Polar Ecosystems: biodiversity and adaptation." The purpose of the symposium is to bring together polar ecologists and biologists and to provide an international forum for exchanging ideas and results. The symposium will focus on ecology, classification, cold adaptation, and natural products of polar organisms. In addition, the conference organizers would like to start discussing and developing an international research effort using Araon, the upcoming Korean icebreaker.
An extended abstract with references and figures (4 page limit) is required for both oral and poster presentations. Online registration and abstract submission can be found on the Symposium website. Registration and abstracts will be accepted from 1 May 2008 - 31 July 2008.

Ancient Polar Ecosystems and Environments: Proxies for Understanding Climate Change and Global Warming

A joint announcement by the Paleontological Society and Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies of a special session to be held at the 2008 Geological Society of America meeting. The session will focus on multidisciplinary studies that encompass multiple proxy indicators of ancient high latitude ecosystems, particularly in the northern hemisphere. Papers focusing on reconstructing both local and regional ecosystems are particularly encouraged.
