Workshop on Measuring Climate Change Impacts in the Southern Ocean

Mechanisms of Quaternary Climate Change: Stability of Warm Phases in the Past and in the Future

The conference, chaired by Carlo Barbante (University of Venice, Italy), will address the difference between past interglacials, their climatic stability and their interaction with polar ice sheets and with the biosphere. The conference will cover several complementary disciplines in the field of climate change and will also aim to involve scientists of other disciplines closely related to climate changes, such as socio-economics and politics. It is therefore perfectly suited to a large variety of researchers. Some grants are available for young researchers to cover the conference fee and travel costs. KOPRI 16th International Symposium on Polar Sciences: Polar Exploration with ARAON

The Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) annually hosts an international symposium to discuss the progress and future of polar sciences. This year, the symposium will be dedicated in particular to celebrating the launch of a brand new icebreaker, R/V Araon. The themes of this symposium, under the banner of "Polar Exploration with Araon", will be focused on the polar research that can be achieved in the field of geosciences on the platform of an icebreaker or research vessel.

Chapman Conference on Abrupt Climate Change

The main objective of the conference is to bring together a diverse group of researchers who deal with paleo-proxy records such as ice cores, corals, marine sediments, terrestrial (lakes and speleothems) archives, and coupled ocean-atmosphere climate models to discuss recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of abrupt climate changes.
Travel support will be provided for as many graduate students and postdocs as possible. Information on the financial support for this conference will be updated on the web page. Participants interested in applying for travel support must submit their application online no later than Friday, 20 March 2009.

International Polar Field School: An Interdisciplinary Experience in Polar Studies
15 June - 3 July 2009, University Centre, Svalbard, Norway
In celebration of the International Polar Year (2007-09), this 3-week course will focus on environmental change in the Arctic and Antarctic through a series of lectures and field excursions in Svalbard, Norway. The course will cover topics on Glaciology, Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography, Marine/Terrestrial Biology, and the Human Dimension in Polar Regions. The field school is organized by APECS in collaboration with UNIS, UArctic and IPY Norway.
Applicants should be Undergraduates or Masters students, with a minimum of 1 year in physical/technical and/or natural sciences.

3rd Environmental Contamination in Antarctica (ECA) Workshop
22 - 23 June 2009, Venice, Italy
The workshop is aimed at:
- completing datasets for environmental contaminants;
- identifying gaps in the existing data;
- defining topics for joint research projects on environmental contamination in Antarctica.
The workshop programme will present contributions from scientists involved in programmes dealing with ECA and studying the transport of micro-components and pollutants in polar regions. In this context, contributions from researchers studying environmental contamination on a large scale, especially in relation to climate change, are of particular interest. The workshop will be dedicated to the memory of colleague Kevin Rosman, who recently passed away. A special talk will present his important contribution towards using stable isotopes as markers of sources and processes contributing to the transport of micro-components.
The workshop is organised through oral presentations and posters, and contributions are invited. Please send the title and authors of your presentation, indicating if you prefer an oral presentation or poster, before 15th May and one abstract of 3-5 pages before 5 June to Gabriele Capodaglio <capoda@unive.it>. In view of SCAR's interest in the environmental contamination of the Antarctic continent by POPs, presentations in this field are particularly welcomed. 3rd GLOBEC International Open Science Meeting

The 3rd and final GLOBEC Open Science Meeting is entitled "Marine ecosystems: from function to prediction" and will focus on the overall objective of GLOBEC of "providing a new mechanistic understanding of the functioning of the marine ecosystem, in order to develop predictive capabilities and propose a framework for the management of marine ecosystems in the era of global change".
Abstract submission has now been extended to 31 January 2009; a reduced early registration fee is available until 30 March. Limited financial support is available for scientists from developing countries and for early career scientists worldwide, the deadline for financial support is 15 January 2009. Session J03, International Polar Year - Early Results
This symposium provides the first opportunity after the official end of the observing period of the International Polar Year 2007-2009 to report new results from IPY projects. The session will particularly highlight interdisciplinary results addressing the IPY themes of assessing the present environmental status of the polar regions; quantifying and understanding environmental changes in polar regions; and better understanding the links between the polar regions and the rest of the globe. Contributions on advances towards implementation of sustainable observing systems of the earth system in polar regions are also welcome.

Workshop on the Response of Antarctic Biota to Climate Change
24 - 29 August 2009, Madralin, near Warsaw, Poland
Announcement of a workshop on the response of marine and terrestrial biota along the Western Antarctic Peninsula to climate change (IPY34 ClicOPEN). This interdisciplinary workshop will address issues of regional climate change and its impact on the marine and terrestrial ecosystems in the maritime Antarctic. The aim of the workshop will be to present new data gathered during IPY ClicOpen and related projects and to discuss potential system changes in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula in the global context. Much of the work and focus will be on King George Island.

The Canadian Film Institute, working in partnership with the International Polar Year, is seeking entries for the International Polar Year Film Festival. The International Polar Year is an event with over 60 countries involved in an intense program of scientific research focused on the Arctic and Antarctic. This special film festival will bring together an international selection of works exploring the issues and activities of the International Polar Year. Ranging from educational works (documentaries, industrial films) to fiction films, the Festival will celebrate the rich diversity of the polar region, as well as examine the many challenges it faces in the 21st Century.
The Canadian Film Institute, committed to programming a dynamic and diverse selection of works related to the representation of the Arctic, welcomes submissions from all film and video practices, including science and research.
The IPY Film Festival will take place from September 28-30 in the Auditorium of Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Submissions must be sent in a playable DVD or video format (NTSC). Send submissions as soon as possible, as the process of selection is already underway. If possible, please include a director's biography, filmography, a film still, contact information, and any other relevant information.

IPY Early Career Research Symposium

The IPY Early Career Research Symposium is organized in conjunction with the 2009 ArcticNet Science Meeting, which will be held after the Symposium in Victoria. With the support of IPY Canada, ArcticNet, and the Northern Research Forum, the Symposium will bring together Arctic and Antarctic early career researchers from across the world with experts to build skills, knowledge, and networks. The workshop is based around seven themes:
- Community-based research;
- Funding your ideas;
- Working with policy makers;
- Communicating your science;
- How do I get started in science?
- Data management; and
- Time management & work/life balance.
The training sessions will give concrete and useful advice, insight, and skills to help early career researchers meet the demands of polar science. The Symposium will also provide an unmatched opportunity to meet and collaborate with fellow early career researchers, and build the networks that will strengthen polar research in the future. Lodging and food will be included and travel support will be available. Registration will be capped at 120 participants.
