Due to several last minute cancellations, there are a few remaining places available for undergraduate students on Michigan State University's study abroad course going to Antarctica and Patagonia during the 2004-05 winter break.
The aim of the course is to further students' knowledge of Antarctic and Southern Hemisphere System Science, how processes like climate change are impacting this region, and how change in the Antarctic region effects the rest of the globe. The 6 credit course is held over a 3-week period and departs Detroit on 18 December and returns on 10 January.
During the course, students
will spend 11 days on board an ice-strengthened tourist ship that will
take them across Drake Passage
to
the
Antarctic Peninsula where
they will observe first hand a variety of Antarctic
wildlife including penguins, seals, whales, and a range of seabirds,
ice bergs and glaciers,
international research stations, and historic whaling
settlements. The remainder of
the course
is spent in Southern Patagonia near the city of Ushuaia,
Argentina where a series of lectures and daily
field trips to museums, several sites in the
southern
Andes, and several national parks will be conducted.
Field safety, sampling, and instructional activities
will be given on field trips.
Assessment is based on the examination of pre-assigned reading materials and lectures, field exercises, and oral presentations and essays related to group and individual projects.
Applications will be
accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, 5 November 2004.
If you cannot assemble an application by this
deadline, but are seriously interested
in joining this course, please contact one of the
faculty
below and a brief deadline
extension may be considered.
