Addendum #2 to SCAR Report #9:
Antarctic Seismic Data Library System for Cooperative Research (SDLS)

This addendum to SCAR Report #9 outlines the revised costs that data collectors must pay to support the production of DVDs (formerly CD-ROMs) for the SDLS. The DVDs are used to store digital Antarctic multichannel seismic-reflection (MCS) and ancillary cruise data for distribution to SDLS branches worldwide.

The revised costs were approved by the SDLS Executive Committee on November 15, 2005, and they update and expand the prior cost structures given in SCAR Report #9 and Addendum #1 to Report #9. The latest revision outlined in this addendum, is based on new DVD technology to increase data storage and thereby further reduce the costs to data collectors by up to 70% over prior costs that were based solely on CD-ROM technology. It should be noted that even though the cost structure agreed in Addendum #1 was predicated on the submission of complete and accurate sets of information, a large percentage of the required costs are still used to cleanup, quality control and standardize formats for all the data submitted for each MCS cruise (e.g., MCS data, navigation, text reports). It should also be noted however that the standardization of formats will allow the data to be published on the SDLS website at no extra cost to the data collector. As outlined in SCAR Report #9, data collectors have the option of creating the DVDs/CD-ROMs themselves according to SDLS standards and would thereby be exempt from these fees. To date, no data collector has chosen the "do it yourself" option.
