Sub-Ice Geological Exploration (SIeGE) Expert Group
Formerly Action Group SIGE, then Expert Group SIeGE (Chair: Ross Powell, USA). The group was disbanded in 2010.
SIeGE aims to:
- Understand the geology and basal ice sheet processes beneath the Antarctic ice sheets.
- Coordinate and develop multinational capabilities in geophysics and drilling to address broad geoscience problems.
- Ensure maximum multidisciplinary science benefit comes from drilling and geophysical exploration.
The SCAR Expert Group SIeGE held its first meeting in St Petersburg on Sunday 6th July. Brief presentations outlining the capabilities, organisational structure and future plans were given for the following groups:
- ANDRILL - Frank Rack
- IODP - Laura de Santis
- FASTDRILL - Ross Powell
- SALE - Martin Siegert
- ICECAP - Duncan Young
- AGAP - Fausto Ferraccioli
- Gamburtsev drilling - Xiaohan Liu
The group supported the concept of developing a coordinated drilling programme including geophysical exploration techniques to understand the geology and basal ice sheet processes beneath the Antarctic ice sheets. The group endorsed a multidisciplinary approach that combined with ice core drilling and biological investigations of the ice and sub ice environment. As a first step towards an Integrated Antarctic Drilling Programme, the group will produce a white paper documenting science objectives, current drilling capabilities, current and future projects, planned technology developments, and future challenges.
