Bio-sketch of Dr Jan van Franeker
Jan van Franeker is a marine biologist leading the Antarctic research of Wageningen IMARES, the marine research institute of Wageningen University and Research (WUR). His original expertise is polar seabirds and seabird pollution problems, gradually expanded to the whole top predator community of marine birds and mammals. The Antarctic research by IMARES is a long term statutory research task commissioned to IMARES by the Netherlands Ministry for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV). IMARES focuses its Antarctic research projects on Antarctic top predators in the seasonal sea ice zone and their food in surface layers associated with sea ice. Improved understanding of the functioning of this ecosystem forms the basis for management and conservation.
