SCAR FellowshipsSCAR Antarctic Fellowship Opportunities for 2022

SCAR launches its 2022 Antarctic-related Fellowships for early-career researchers today. Following the recent launch of the Polar Initiative the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has funded an additional SCAR fellowship and as a result SCAR will offer in total four to five fellowships of up to USD $15,000 each for 2022. The details for the SCAR scheme will be similar to previous years but with the opportunity for applicants to propose partly or entirely remote fellowships to reflect the impact of Covid19 related travel restrictions.

The deadline for the SCAR fellowship applications is 31 August 2022.

Other opportunities from partners

Four leading Antarctic organisations have announced opportunities for early-career professionals.

SCAR, the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP), the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) work together to support talented early-career researchers, scientists, engineers, environmental managers, and other professionals. The purpose is to strengthen international capacity and cooperation in fields such as climate, biodiversity, conservation, humanities and astrophysics research by providing annual funding opportunities.

In 2022, COMNAP and IAATO will each offer one fellowship with funding of up to USD $15,000. The fellowships enable early-career persons to join a project team from another country, opening up new opportunities and often creating partnerships that last for many years and over many Antarctic field seasons. Note that the application processes for the COMNAP and IAATO fellowships are separate from those for the SCAR Fellowships and the eligibility criteria differ. The deadline for the COMNAP and IAATO fellowship applications is 30 June 2022.

The CCAMLR scholarship provides funding of up to AUD $30 000 to assist early-career scientists to participate in the work of the CCAMLR Scientific Committee and its working groups over a period of two years. The objective of the scheme is to build capacity within the CCAMLR scientific community to help generate and sustain the scientific expertise needed to support the work of CCAMLR in the long term. While the focus of the scholarships is to support travel to meetings, CCAMLR recognises the important role of mentors and the continuation of the scheme even while meetings may be held virtually due to COVID-19, as well as carrying forward funding for scholarships to travel to meetings into the future when travel restrictions ease. The deadline for the CCAMLR scholarship applications is 31 August 2022.

All opportunities are being jointly promoted by the organisations involved.
