Dr Ryan Reisinger is a lecturer in Marine Biology and Ecology at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton. His work focuses on the ecology of marine predators. He looks at how the biophysical oceanographic environment influences the behaviour and distribution of marine predators and how we can model and forecast these aspects of their ecology in our changing seascapes. Increasingly he is exploring the applied and broader implications of this work – how do we use this information about marine predators for conservation, management and to understand broader ecosystem pattern, process and status? To do this he uses data from technologies including animal biologging and remote-sensing, which he analyses with modern, highly-quantitative tools like machine learning.

Current research projects / interests:

  • The Retrospective Analysis of Antarctic Tracking Data (RAATD) project
  • Ecology of Southern Ocean baleen whales
  • Ecology of sub-Antarctic killer whales

Keywords: marine mammals; seabirds; movement ecology; habitat modelling; distribution; behaviour
